[SMM Nickel Flash News] Weekly Weather Outlook (August 18–23)

Indonesia’s key nickel-producing regions are expected to see generally favorable weather conditions this week. Central Sulawesi (Morowali) is forecast to experience minimal rainfall, supporting largely normal mining and logistics operations. Halmahera is also expected to see limited rainfall, with no significant weather-related disruptions anticipated. In the Philippines, Palawan is forecast to receive around 40–50 mm of rainfall, with moderate showers potentially affecting mine-road transportation and vessel loading, particularly toward the weekend. Surigao is expected to receive around 25–35 mm, with intermittent showers and a higher likelihood of rainfall on August 22–23, potentially causing minor disruptions to mining and logistics. Zambales faces a similar rainfall pattern at around 25–35 mm, with more frequent showers toward the weekend that could temporarily affect mining, transportation and port operations.

【SMM Nickel Flash News】Indonesia Takes Enforcement Action Against Companies Linked to Former Glencore Trader

Indonesia's Forest Area Management Task Force announced that authorities are taking immediate law enforcement action against companies controlled by or associated with Arif Kurniawan, a former Glencore nickel trader. Preliminary investigations identified potential violations involving mining operations, permits and forest land use, although specific enforcement measures have not yet been disclosed. Kurniawan is considered a major figure in Indonesia's nickel industry. After leaving Glencore more than a decade ago, he became one of the country's largest nickel ore traders. An investigative report indicated that his trading volume accounted for approximately one-third of Indonesia's total nickel ore supply in 2024. He also reportedly holds mining rights to at least 20 mining areas across Indonesia alongside a key business partner.
