[Vietnam] Quang Ngai seeks new site for VNSteel’s high-quality steel sheet project in Dung Quat

Published: Aug 14, 2026 10:01
Quang Ngai authorities have asked the Dung Quat Economic Zone and Industrial Parks Management Board to urgently identify a new suitable location for Vietnam Steel Corporation (VNSteel)’s proposed high-quality steel sheet production project in Dung Quat Economic Zone. The project, proposed for an area of around 20 hectares in the eastern Dung Quat Industrial Park, aims to develop steel products without discharging industrial wastewater, with wastewater collected, treated and recycled. The initially proposed site overlaps with three previously approved investment projects that remain valid. Provincial Chairman Nguyen Duc Tam instructed the management board to identify and report a new location to the provincial government by August 30, allowing VNSteel to conduct further surveys and prepare for implementation.

Both supply and demand were cautious, and market shipments were mostly from earlier orders. In recent days, coke and imported ore prices have risen to some extent, pushing steel mill costs higher and weighing on production enthusiasm.

[SMM Analysis] El Niño-Water Scarcity in Indonesia: Coking Coal Disruption & The Effect to Indonesian Steel Prices
Indonesia is currently navigating a confluence of climate-driven supply disruptions, the most consequential of which is the El Niño-induced water shortage affecting the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) and the broader Kalimantan coal corridor. While IMIP's steel producers have absorbed some of the impact, coking coal and coke producers have been hit disproportionately harder, given the water-intensive nature of the coking process.
