[Storage: South Africa to develop 184MW solar and 300MWh storage project]

SolarAfrica has partnered with MPower, the energy platform of the Moolman Group, and Fledge Capital to develop the Highveld Hybrid Energy project near eMalahleni in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The project will combine a 184MW utility-scale solar PV plant with a 300MWh battery storage system and is expected to begin supplying wheeled renewable electricity from 2029. It aims to provide businesses with greater energy security, long-term price certainty and access to clean electricity.

Global storage owner-operator BW ESS has acquired the Yanco battery energy storage system from Australian renewable energy developer ACEnergy, the companies announced on August 13, 2026. The project, located in New South Wales, is configured at 250 MW/1,000 MWh with a four-hour duration, positioning it to capture value across energy arbitrage, frequency control, and ancillary services in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM). The transaction reflects continued international capital interest in Australian grid-scale storage assets, as the country's coal retirement timeline and renewable penetration drive urgent demand for flexible capacity. For ACEnergy, the sale represents a capital-recycling event to fund new greenfield development, while BW ESS expands its operational footprint in one of the world's fastest-growing storage markets.

U.S. Battery Storage Averaged 70% Annual Growth Over Past Three Years, EIA Reports
U.S. utility-scale battery storage capacity has expanded at an annual average rate of 70% over the last three years, according to the Energy Information Administration's (EIA) latest generator inventory data released on August 7, 2026. By the end of 2025, the U.S. power grid had 43.6 GW of operational battery storage. Operators added another 8.3 GW during the first half of 2026, bringing total installed capacity to nearly 52 GW. Looking ahead, developers anticipate bringing an additional 54 GW online over the next two and a half years, with 14 GW slated for the second half of 2026, 26 GW in 2027, and 14 GW in 2028. The EIA notes that battery deployment continues to track closely with solar buildout, absorbing daytime generation surpluses and discharging during evening peaks.
