PV Module Scheduled Production Slightly Up MoM Underpins Frame Production Starts; Aluminum Prices Expected to Consolidate on a Strong Note in Short Term Amid Macro Fundamental Tug-of-War Between Longs and Shorts [SMM Analysis]

SMM August 6 –

PV Aluminum Extrusion: Within this week’s surveyed sample, PV frame enterprises primarily focused on executing orders on hand, with the industry’s operating rate remaining stable. Some top-tier players continued to stay high. During the week, the supply-demand pattern of downstream PV modules showed no significant changes. The August production schedule for PV module enterprises is expected to edge up MoM from July, providing a stable demand floor for the operating rates of PV frame enterprises. In the near term, the operating rate of PV frame enterprises is expected to continue stable operations.

Raw Material Prices: During the period (August 3–August 6, 2026), the SMM A00 weekly average price stood at 23,680 yuan/mt, up 1.4% WoW from the previous period. Overall, divergences persisted in the Middle East situation. Although the US Fed did not raise interest rates in July, its overall stance remained hawkish. Fundamentals continued their deficit, with aluminum ingot inventory destocking. In the short term, aluminum prices are expected to consolidate on a strong note. Next week, the most-traded SHFE aluminum contract is expected to trade within the range of 23,200–24,200 yuan/mt, while LME aluminum is expected to trade within the range of $3,100–$3,250/mt. Going forward, close attention should be paid to the progress of production resumptions and new project commissioning plan dynamics in the Middle East.

[Solar: US to impose Section 232 minimum import prices and 15% tariffs on polysilicon derivatives]
The US president has issued a proclamation based on the Commerce Department’s Section 232 investigation, introducing import measures on polysilicon and its derivative products to protect semiconductor and solar supply-chain security. From Dec. 4, 2026, the US will apply a minimum import price mechanism of USD 21/kg for polysilicon, USD 100/kg for ingots and wafers, USD 0.22/W for solar cells, and USD 0.38/W for solar modules. The proclamation also imposes an additional 15% ad valorem duty on relevant polysilicon derivatives, with a 10% rate for UK products and a combined 15% tariff treatment for products from Japan, Korea, Taiwan Province of China, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the EU. It also authorizes the Commerce Department to establish an onshoring incentive program for US polysilicon, ingot, wafer and cell production. SMM believes the measures, if implemented, would significantly raise the import price floor for solar products entering the US, strengthen the push for domestic manufacturing, and increase compliance and cost pressure on overseas module, cell and upstream material suppliers.

[SMM Silver Weekly Review: Silver Surges 7% This Week; Double Bottom Pattern Emerges; Mixed Outlook Ahead] This week, silver prices moved up unilaterally, gaining 7.08% WoW. Weaker ADP data and US-Iran peace talks drove a pullback in rate hike expectations, but hawkish comments and cautious sentiment ahead of the non-farm payrolls limited gains. Spot supply and demand were both weak, with transactions centered around parity. Inventories edged down, while ETF holdings inched up WoW. A short-term double bottom pattern has taken shape, but the foundation for further upside remains fragile. Watch for guidance from the upcoming non-farm payrolls data.
