[SMM Survey: Magnesium Alloys Successively Implemented in Vehicle and Robot Frames, Accelerating High-End Equipment Applications] Recently, the lightweight applications of magnesium alloys have achieved landmark progress, realising industrialisation breakthroughs in two high-growth sectors—NEVs and humanoid robots—indicating a clear momentum towards large-scale development.

Magnesium alloy lightweight applications have recently achieved landmark breakthroughs, with simultaneous industrialisation advances in two high-growth sectors—NEVs and humanoid robots—making the industry’s scale-up trajectory increasingly clear.

In the NEV space, Geely Automobile Research Institute joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s National Engineering Research Center of Light Alloy Net Forming for focused technical exchanges on 30 July, working with Fengyang Gokin Solar to advance the mass production of large magnesium alloy die-cast components. Leveraging the JDM series of high-performance magnesium alloy materials and large thin-walled high-density die-casting technology, the enterprise has reached volume production of automotive die-cast parts such as shock towers, subframes, electric drive housings and transmission housings ; supported by over 100 die-casting units ranging from 280T to 4,000T, its annual casting capacity has reached 30 million components. The two parties have jointly tackled industrialisation pain points—including yield-rate fluctuations, bolt loosening caused by high-temperature creep, and insufficient anti-corrosion and wear resistance—optimising product performance through an integrated R&D approach of “material selection – simulation – mould design.” Academician Ding Wenjiang proposed the “three-specialisation-to-one-transfer” concept, coupling AI-driven industrial upgrading to help magnesium alloy structural parts deeply support complete NEV builds.

On the humanoid robot track, Wuling Industrial delivered China’s first magnesium alloy embodied-robot skeleton on 4 August. Utilising semi-solid die-casting, the team overcame challenges such as incomplete filling of thin-walled complex parts and elevated defect rates; the finished component achieved a weight reduction exceeding 30% compared with its aluminum alloy counterpart, with standout advantages in shock absorption and electromagnetic shielding. After micro-arc oxidation treatment, it delivers excellent wear and weather resistance, effectively improving robot agility and driving range.

The two scenarios together confirm that magnesium alloy die-cast parts balance lightweighting with mechanical properties. As industry‑academia‑research collaboration deepens and process bottlenecks are progressively resolved, they are expected to unlock further growth in a broader range of high-end equipment fields going forward.

[Magnesium Market Remains in the Doldrums; Transactions Improve but Price Trend Unchanged] Fugu magnesium ingot mainstream quotations stand at 15,400-15,500 yuan/mt, with FOB quotations at $2,190-2,290/mt. Weak demand in China and overseas, coupled with mounting inventory, has prompted producers to sell at concessions. Market sentiment is pessimistic and cautious, and prices are expected to remain in the doldrums in the short term.

[Supply Continues to Release but Demand Remains Weak, Magnesium Ingot Under Pressure] Quotes for magnesium ingot in China's main production areas continued to decline today. Producers showed strong willingness to sell and recoup funds, with supply continuing to release. However, end-use demand in China and overseas remained sluggish, with only rigid-demand transactions concluded. Market sentiment was largely wait-and-see, and inventory pressure mounted. Overall, the market was weak and under pressure ahead of the holiday.

Latrobe Magnesium's Phase 1B Plant 90% Installed, Targets 2026 Magnesium Production
【SMM Magnesium Flash】On October 1st, Latrobe Magnesium released an updated project status, indicating that the installation progress of its Phase 1B demonstration plant in Victoria has reached 90%, marking a significant increase from 70% at the end of August. Overall commissioning is 25% complete, with successful dry test runs of the ball mill and briquetting machine. Key installation activities in the reduction furnace area have been completed, and vacuum testing is currently underway for 30 sets of distillation tanks and condenser components. The company maintains its target of producing the first batch of magnesium metal (purity >98%) by the end of 2026, and project expenditures are being controlled within the original budget of AUD 6.1 million. As the demonstration line gradually commences production, its low-carbon process route for extracting magnesium from lignite ash is expected to undergo industrial verification.
