[SMM Nickel Flash News] Weekly Weather Outlook (August 3–7)

Published: Aug 3, 2026 09:00
Indonesia's major nickel-producing regions are expected to experience generally manageable weather conditions, with Central Sulawesi (Morowali) forecast to receive 10–30 mm of rainfall, posing minimal disruption to mining and logistics. Southeast Sulawesi (Konawe) is forecast to receive 20–40 mm of rainfall, with mostly light showers and only isolated afternoon rainfall of 1–9 mm, allowing mining and port operations to continue normally. Halmahera is expected to remain the wettest region with 40–80 mm of rainfall, which may cause temporary interruptions to mining, hauling, and port operations during heavier showers, while Obi Island is forecast to receive 15–35 mm, allowing operations to remain largely unaffected. In the Philippines, Palawan is forecast to receive 30–60 mm of rainfall, resulting in only a limited risk of localized delays to mining and vessel loading, while Homonhon Island is expected to receive a relatively lower 10–20 mm, supporting favorable mining and shipping conditions. Meanwhile, Zambales (West Luzon) is forecast to receive the heaviest rainfall of 80–140 mm, with rainfall intensity reaching 4.7–22 mm. A severe flood warning and wind gusts of up to 44–57 kt by Friday may increase the risk of localized disruptions to mining, inland transportation, and port operations. Overall, weather-related remains limited, with only localized operational disruptions in the wetter regions, particularly Halmahera and Zambales.

【SMM Nickel Flash】Philippines & China Weather Update (August 24, 2026)
Typhoon Saudel (locally Obet) entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on August 24 and is moving west-northwestward, with potential impacts on the East China Sea and East China coast around August 26–27, though the track remains uncertain. For nickel logistics, Zambales/Sta. Cruz and Subic loading ports remain the key areas to watch, as heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas could cause short-term disruptions to ore loading and transportation. Surigao and other major nickel areas are expected to see limited impact. In mainland China, the East China Sea route and East China coastal ports should be monitored, as deteriorating sea conditions could temporarily affect vessel operations and port activities around August 26–27.

Meanwhile, the government has delayed the implementation of the planned windfall tax, while further details on the policy remain under discussion. Weather conditions across major nickel-producing regions remain generally manageable, although localized heavy rainfall could still cause temporary disruptions to mining and logistics. The market is also waiting for a potential revision to the HPM formula for limonite ore. Any changes to the pricing mechanism, particularly the treatment of associated metals and corrective factors, could affect limonite pricing and HPAL feedstock economics.
