[Solar: FLEXELL SPACE raises USD 20mn to scale space solar solutions]

Published: Jul 28, 2026 09:38 (GMT+8)
South Korean space solar technology developer FLEXELL SPACE has raised USD 20 million in Series A funding to accelerate development and commercialization of next-generation solar solutions for space applications, targeting full-scale production in 2028. The company develops lightweight, flexible solar cells based on perovskite and CIGS technologies for satellites, high-altitude UAVs, space stations and future lunar and Mars missions. It was also recently selected to lead a five-year, USD 7.1 million government-backed project to develop tandem solar modules for space applications.

[SMM PV Update] Sophia University and others have developed a new lead-free perovskite solar cell technology that improves both durability and conversion efficiency.
Sophia University and others have replaced lead with tin, simultaneously improving the durability and conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells. This achievement is expected to advance the practical application of perovskite cells with lower environmental burden and high safety. Perovskite cells absorb light through layers formed by atoms such as iodine and lead that create a special crystal structure. Since the lead contained in this structure is a toxic substance, researchers have been working on replacing lead with tin, which has similar properties. However, tin is prone to oxidation, which disrupts the crystal structure, so balancing conversion efficiency and durability has remained a challenge to be solved. The research team designed the perovskite layer as a structure in which conductive layers composed of tin and iodine alternate with non-conductive organic molecular layers. By introducing organic molecular layers, the ingress of water and oxygen can be blocked, thereby improving durability. Although the method of introducing organic molecular layers improves durability, it increases electrical resistance and tends to cause a decline in conversion efficiency. To address this, the research team suppressed the efficiency decline by adding additives. According to reports, this method prevents tin oxidation and maintains approximately 85% of the initial performance even after 100 days.

[SMM PV Flash] The Ordos 4 million kW new energy project transmission project at the Kubuqi Desert Base, a core supporting new energy delivery project for the Mengxi-Tianjin South UHV corridor, has achieved full-line connection.
On October 24, as the last conductor was pulled into place at tower position A76, the transmission project for the 4 million kW new energy base in Ordos, located in the Kubuqi Desert, completed all stringing work, marking the full connection of this key project serving cross-regional green electricity transmission. The project has now entered the final sprint phase before commissioning. The project is the core supporting new energy delivery project for the Mengxi–Tianjin South UHV corridor, with a total investment of 1.94 billion yuan. The line starts from the 500 kV Dalu Substation, connects through the newly built 500 kV Bu'ertao Substation, and ultimately feeds into the 1000 kV UHV Ordos Station. A total of two 500 kV substations were newly built along the entire route, with 279 kilometers of 500 kV transmission lines and 340 steel towers erected. Since construction officially began on December 8, 2025, the construction team overcame multiple challenges such as sandstorms and complex terrain within a desert construction window of less than 12 months, efficiently completing all stringing period tasks.

[SMM PV News] AIKO ABC Supports the Delivery of GD Power's Otog Front Banner New Energy Project, Creating a Fully Self-Generated and Self-Consumed "Desert-Gobi-Wasteland" New Sample
Recently, AIKO initiated module delivery for the Guodian Power Otog Front Banner fully self-generated and self-consumed new energy project, with the first batch of high-efficiency ABC modules arriving on site. The project is located in Shanghaimiao Town, with a total investment of approximately 770 million yuan, comprising 214 MW of PV and 100 MW of wind power, along with supporting step-up substations, transmission lines, and energy storage facilities. All generated power will be fully self-generated and self-consumed, connected to the Guoneng Shanghaimiao Power Plant for consumption, making it a key project for advancing clean energy substitution in the region. Leveraging the high-efficiency power generation performance of ABC modules in desert-Gobi-wasteland scenarios, AIKO will provide reliable guarantees for the project's long-term stable operation, helping Guodian Power build a benchmark for high-efficiency, high-reliability green electricity in Inner Mongolia's desert-Gobi-wasteland areas.
