[Solar: Canadian Solar starts Phase I of US HJT cell factory]

CS PowerTech, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, has inaugurated Phase I of its solar cell manufacturing facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The company said the plant is the first US factory designed to manufacture HJT bifacial n-type solar cells. Trial production began in April 2026 with 2.1GW of nameplate capacity, and output will gradually ramp up over the coming months. Canadian Solar also plans to begin a second expansion phase before the end of the year. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to produce more than 6GW of solar cells annually, represent nearly USD 1 billion in local investment, and create over 1,200 manufacturing, engineering and technical jobs. The plant will complement Canadian Solar’s module factory in Mesquite, Texas, which is targeting 10GW of nameplate capacity by H2 2026.

STEG has also published a technical guide setting out minimum requirements for the design, installation, operation and maintenance of PV systems with batteries and hybrid inverters to ensure system and grid safety.

South African coal miner Exxaro Resources, through its renewable energy business Cennergi, has commissioned the 68MW AC Lephalale Solar Project, its first utility-scale self-generation renewable energy asset in South Africa. Located near the Grootegeluk Mine in Limpopo, the behind-the-meter solar plant includes 129,024 modules across 185 hectares and is backed by a 25-year PPA with the mine. The ZAR 1.7 billion project is expected to generate around 176GWh of renewable electricity annually for daytime mine operations and has been licensed for future BESS integration.

Hong Kong-listed Shanxi Installation Group has secured an EPC contract worth around RMB 1.5 billion for the 500MW Al Kamil Phase I solar PV project in Oman. The contract also includes 2.5 years of operation and maintenance services. Developed by EDF Group subsidiary EDF power solutions, the project is located in Al Kamil Wal Wafi, around 230 km from Muscat.
