[SMM Aluminum Price Weekly Review: Macro Front Sentiment Improves Slightly, Forward Surplus Pressure Persists]

SMM, July 23:

1. Macro Front

The US-Iran conflict continues to escalate, maintaining disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Regional geopolitical risk premiums persist and supply uncertainties linger. The US CPI monthly rate turned negative for the first time in six years, dampening market expectations of an imminent US Fed rate hike and easing marginal constraints on the nonferrous metals sector.

2. Fundamentals

In markets outside China, production resumptions and new capacity for aluminum outside China continue to ramp up as planned, sustaining market expectations that global aluminum supply will shift from tight to loose in the long term and persistently limiting upside room for aluminum prices. However, ongoing Middle East shipping risks continue to stir concerns that regional raw material inflows and finished aluminum outflows could be obstructed; coupled with rising crude oil prices pushing up smelting energy costs outside China, this provides some bottom support for aluminum prices in the short term. LME visible inventory currently remains low, but the improvement in spot premiums is limited, leaving bulls with insufficient momentum for sustained upward moves.

In the Chinese market, inventory side, China’s aluminum social inventory continues its destocking channel, providing strong support for aluminum prices.

3. Overall Assessment

Overall, macro sentiment has improved slightly recently. Sustained Middle East geopolitical risk premiums and ongoing destocking of aluminum ingot in China jointly underpin aluminum prices. However, the continued rollout of aluminum capacity outside China in the long term, weak traditional end-use demand in China, and repeated macro uncertainties create significant pressure on aluminum’s upside room. Overall assessment: aluminum prices are expected to maintain a consolidation pattern in the short term. Next week, the most-traded SHFE aluminum contract is expected to trade in the range of 22,800-23,500 yuan/mt, and LME aluminum is expected to trade in the range of $3,150-3,220/mt.

【SMM Aluminum Flash News】Gulf Primary Aluminum Output Falls Nearly 40% from Pre-Conflict Levels in April
Preliminary IAI data showed Gulf primary aluminum production fell to 10,989 mt/day in April 2026, down 26.7% from March and nearly 40% below the pre-conflict level of around 17,800 mt/day. Disruptions to commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have constrained raw material supplies and delayed aluminum exports. The Gulf accounts for around 8% of global primary aluminum production but supplies about 19% of EU, 28% of Japanese and 21% of US primary aluminum imports. Tightening supply has pushed LME aluminum to a four-year high, while US Midwest and European premiums have also strengthened.

India’s National Aluminium Company (NALCO) has inaugurated a 50 kg/day fly ash processing pilot plant at its Research & Technology Centre in Bhubaneswar. Based on jointly patented technology developed by NALCO and CSIR-IMMT, the facility can recover alumina and iron hydroxide residue enriched with rare earth elements (REE), including scandium. NALCO also held a ground-breaking ceremony for a red mud valorisation pilot plant aimed at recovering ferro-titanium alloy, metallic iron and REEs, supporting greater resource recovery from aluminium industry residues.

【SMM Aluminum Flash News】Hydro Signs Hybrid Renewable PPA for 10 GWh Power Supply
Hydro Energi, a subsidiary of Norsk Hydro, has signed an 18-month hybrid PPA with Sweden’s Varberg Energi, covering 10 GWh of electricity in the SE3 bidding zone from July 2026. Power will be supplied from wind and solar generation combined with energy storage, aiming to reduce renewable-energy variability and provide a more stable supply for industrial consumption. The agreement will also serve as a pilot for potential wider deployment of similar hybrid power solutions.
