SMM, July 23: Overnight, LME copper opened at $13,883.5/mt, hit a high of $13,888/mt early in the session, then drifted lower throughout the session, touching a low of $13,800/mt near the close, and finally settled at $13,806.5/mt, down 0.17%. Trading volume was 19,200 lots, and open interest stood at 246,000 lots, up 1,752 lots from the previous trading day, as bears added positions. Overnight, the most-traded SHFE copper 2609 contract opened at 106,000 yuan/mt, hit a high of 106,190 yuan/mt early in the session, then the price center shifted lower and touched 105,810 yuan/mt, before swinging wildly and eventually settling at 105,940 yuan/mt, down 0.16%. Trading volume was 26,600 lots, and open interest stood at 224,000 lots, down 3,512 lots from the previous day, as bulls reduced positions. On the macro front, Iran denied Trump's claim that Tehran had requested negotiations, calling it "groundless"; US Secretary of State Rubio expressed willingness to seek a diplomatic solution but pointed to a lack of sincerity from Iran. Trump threatened that if Iran attacks ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the US would destroy its bridges or power plants, while Iran's military responded that if the US carries out its threat, it would cut off all oil flows in the Gulf and strike regional energy and economic infrastructure. Additionally, Trump expects a federal government shutdown in September, and overnight copper prices consolidated amid these developments. On the fundamentals front, supply side, some suppliers increased shipments, but registered SX-EW copper supplies were scarce, resulting in an overall structurally tight balance; demand side, high copper prices, high premiums, and the off-season continued to weigh on downstream procurement, which remained persistently weak. Overall, copper prices are expected to consolidate on a subdued note today.

[SMM Flash]Kazakhstan opens new access to the Indian Ocean, unlocking export potential for sulphur
Kazakhstan and Iran have signed a 27-year cooperation agreement to build a dedicated logistics terminal at Shahid Rajaee Port. The facility is scheduled to be completed within two years and commence commercial operations in the third year. The project opens an outbound shipping route connecting to the Persian Gulf, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Africa, strengthens the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC), and expands export channels for Kazakh sulphur. In the medium to long term, it is expected to unleash Kazakhstan’s sulphur export capacity and reshape regional sulphur trade flows. Notes: The project is currently at the agreement signing stage and construction has not yet started. At least two years remain before commissioning; impacts will materialise over the long run with no immediate supply disruption. Geopolitical risks: Uncertainties surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the situation in Iran may affect project progress. Transport route: Sulphur will need to be transported via the Caspian Sea or overland across Central Asia and inland Iran to reach the port. Customs clearance and freight stability along the entire cross-border overland corridor remain subject to variables.

Lundin Gold Discovers Two More Porphyry Systems at Sandia, Maiden Resource Expected in 2027
Lundin Gold has identified two additional porphyry systems, Sandia Northeast and Sandia Southeast, at its Sandia copper-gold discovery in Ecuador, increasing the number of known porphyry centres at the Fruta del Norte district from five to seven. The company expects to publish a maiden resource estimate for Sandia in early 2027. The deposit currently covers an interpreted footprint of approximately 1.6 km by 700 metres and extends to a depth of about 1 km within a 5-km mineralized corridor. According to Jefferies, Sandia could support an initial resource of approximately 500 million to one billion tonnes based on its current dimensions, while remaining open to the north, east and at depth. Lundin Gold believes continued exploration success could significantly enhance the long-term value of the Fruta del Norte district and potentially support the development of a large-scale copper-gold operation.
