China's imports of cobalt hydrometallurgical intermediate products jumped 324% month-on-month in June 2026

China imported around 10,961 physical tons of cobalt hydrometallurgical intermediates in June 2026, surging 324% month-on-month and falling 42% year-on-year, of which imports from the Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at approximately 10,815 physical tons, up 423% month-on-month and down 43% year-on-year.

The average import price of cobalt hydrometallurgical intermediates was USD 16,352 per physical ton in June 2026, dropping 1.54% month-on-month.

Around 7,561 physical tons of imported intermediates entered Zhejiang and Guangdong via logistics goods under special customs supervision zones, accounting for 69% of total imports; general trade registered about 2,849 physical tons, making up 26%; and processing trade with imported materials reached roughly 550 physical tons, taking a 5% share.

[Solid-State Battery: China–Kazakhstan Perovskite PV and All-Solid-State Energy Storage Research Center Unveiled in Ordos] On July 6, 2026, the China–Kazakhstan Perovskite PV and All-Solid-State Energy Storage Research Center was officially inaugurated at the Ordos New Energy Research Institute. Jointly established by Beihang University, Nazarbayev University of Kazakhstan, and the Ordos New Energy Research Institute, the center will leverage Ordos’ industrial resources and Beihang’s research strengths to promote joint research and technology transfer in perovskite PV and all-solid-state energy storage, building an innovation platform for China–Kazakhstan new energy cooperation. SMM believes that the deployment of large-scale all-solid-state energy storage projects is still more than five years away.
