[Lithium Battery: LG To Operate Nanjing Plant 9 In Second Half Of 2026]

According to foreign media reports, LG Energy Solution plans to start operating its Plant 9 in Nanjing, China, in the second half of 2026. The new facility will add cylindrical battery production lines to meet the growing demand from Tesla's electric vehicles. The plant was completed two to three years ago and will be put into operation for the first time. Employees for the new production lines are expected to report to work around July 20. The company plans to initially start operating two new cylindrical battery production lines at Plant 9 in the second half of this year, with additional production lines gradually added over time. Each production line has an annual capacity of approximately 2GWh, with the total capacity expected to expand to the tens of GWh level.

SMM believes that the deployment of large-scale all-solid-state energy storage projects is still more than five years away.

[China's Lithium Hydroxide Exports Outpace Imports in June, Back to Net Exporter]
According to customs data, China's lithium hydroxide imports reached 4,400 tonnes in June 2026, up 12% month-on-month and nearly tripling year-on-year. By source country, imports from South Korea totaled 1,159 tonnes, accounting for 26% of the total; Chile ranked second with 993 tonnes; notably, imports from Indonesia remained at a low level, with only 774 tonnes arriving in June. On the export side, China's lithium hydroxide exports in June amounted to 6,018 tonnes, an increase of 70% month-on-month, mainly driven by end-of-quarter shipment concentration and a modest recovery in overseas demand. Among these, exports to South Korea were 5,032 tonnes, and to Japan 679 tonnes. Overall, exports significantly exceeded imports for the month, meaning China's lithium hydroxide trade has temporarily returned to a net export position after several months.
