High-Grade NPI Discount Widens, Still Insufficient for Large-Scale Nickel Matte Conversion

[SMM Nickel Express] This week, the average discount of high-grade NPI over refined nickel widened slightly. Although the discount has widened, the current price spread has not yet reached the level needed to cover the conversion of NPI to high-grade nickel matte, and it does not provide the economic incentive to drive large-scale switching of smelting lines to produce high-grade nickel matte.

The Indonesian Nickel Miners Association (APNI) has recommended setting the 2026 nickel ore RKAB at 270 million wmt plus a 30 million wmt strategic buffer, implying a potential total of 300 million wmt. According to SMM data, on August 13, the FOB price of nickel in Indonesian MHP fell $35/mt Ni from the previous day, and the FOB price of cobalt in Indonesian MHP fell $1,436/mt Co. The FOB price of Indonesian high-grade nickel matte fell $36/mt Ni.
