Trafigura backs out of Angola transmission line project sources say

According to Reuters, commodity trader Trafigura has withdrawn from a proposed 2,000 MW cross-border transmission project that was intended to deliver surplus hydropower from Angola to mining operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia. The project aimed to supply electricity to copper and cobalt mines in the two countries, helping to ease their long-standing power shortages. Trafigura signed a non-binding agreement with engineering firm ProMarks and the Angolan government in July 2024 to conduct feasibility studies for the project. However, sources familiar with the matter said the company has now pulled out. The Angolan government confirmed that the project remains under negotiation and that changes are being made to the consortium members involved. Trafigura declined to comment, while the Angolan government has yet to clarify whether it will continue pursuing the project.
