[SMM Rare Earth Morning Brief] Ore Prices Track Gains in Oxides, Magnetic Material Market Sees Moderate Trading

[Ore Prices Follow Oxide Gains, Magnetic Material Market Sees Average Trading] Yesterday, Pr-Nd oxide market prices followed futures and pulled back slightly, but most suppliers held firm on quotes, and low-priced supply remained difficult to find. In the medium-heavy rare earth segment, dysprosium and terbium market prices continued to hold up well mainly, with some buyers making small purchases.

SMM, July 15:

Rare Earth Ore:

Price: Rare earth carbonate was priced at about 61,800 yuan/mt, monazite at about 44,000 yuan/mt, and medium-yttrium, europium-rich ore at about 255,000 yuan/mt.

Supply-demand: Currently, the overall circulation frequency of rare earth ore remained sluggish, with market trading stagnant, but the rise in oxide prices also led to an increase in the actual transaction prices of rare earth ore.

Rare Earth Oxides:

Price: Pr-Nd oxide prices pulled back slightly overall, while dysprosium oxide and terbium oxide prices remained relatively firm.

Supply-demand: Yesterday, the market price of Pr-Nd oxide pulled back slightly following futures, but most suppliers held offers firm, and low-priced cargoes remained hard to source; in the medium-heavy rare earth segment, dysprosium and terbium prices continued to hold up well, with some buyers making small-volume purchases.

Rare Earth Metals:

Price: Pr-Nd alloy prices pulled back, with weak market trading performance, while dysprosium-iron alloy held steady and terbium metal prices declined slightly.

Supply-demand: Yesterday, Pr-Nd alloy prices pulled back slightly. Influenced by sluggish inquiries, metal plants slightly lowered their offers, but downstream users focused on just-in-time procurement, resulting in poor actual trading. In the medium-heavy rare earth segment, terbium metal prices declined slightly due to a stalemate in actual trading, while dysprosium-iron alloy prices continued to hold steady.

NdFeB Blanks:

Price: NdFeB blank N38 (Ce) was reported at 220-230 yuan/kg, 38M blank at 263-273 yuan/kg, and 38UH blank at 365-385 yuan/kg.

Supply-demand: Yesterday, NdFeB blank offers temporarily stabilized, primarily because the stabilization of raw material prices kept NdFeB offers stable. In terms of trading, with the off-season onset, end-user and motor factory production pace gradually slowed down, just-in-time order releases were moderate, and large-scale restocking orders failed to be effectively released, resulting in average overall NdFeB market trading volume.

NdFeB Scrap:

Price: Prices of Pr-Nd recycled from NdFeB scrap remained stable, as did dysprosium recycled from NdFeB scrap and terbium recycled from NdFeB scrap.

Supply-demand: Yesterday, scrap market prices continued to hold steady. Affected by relatively small fluctuations in oxide offers, recycling enterprises did not make significant adjustments to their external purchase offers, still focusing on just-in-time procurement, while scrap suppliers adopted a wait-and-see attitude toward shipping, resulting in mediocre actual market transactions.

Australian Government Tightens Scrutiny on Chinese Investors in Rare Earth Project Amid Security Concerns
[SMM Rare Earth Flash] The Australian government recently escalated its scrutiny of investors linked to China in rare earth developer Northern Minerals. This May, Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers ordered six China-linked shareholders to sell their combined holdings by July 2, citing national security concerns. After the shareholders failed to comply, the government froze part of the shares in July and imposed new conditions on Qogir and Real International Resources in August, requiring government review of any share sales. Northern Minerals is developing the Brown Ranges heavy rare earth project in Western Australia, which it says could become an "important cornerstone" of dysprosium and terbium supply outside China. The project has previously received up to $250 million in debt financing from Australia's export finance agency and the US Export-Import Bank, but shareholder disputes have hindered negotiations with US government financing agencies.

Ucore Rare Metals Produces High-Purity Pr-Nd Samples Using RapidSX™ Technology in Ontario Facility
[SMM Rare Earth News] Canadian rare earth refiner Ucore Rare Metals recently announced that its commercial demonstration facility in Kingston, Ontario, has successfully produced high-purity (99.5%) Pr-Nd samples from two different raw material sources. The company used about 2 mt of mixed rare earth oxides from a Vietnamese ion-adsorption clay ore source and about 5 mt of mixed rare earth carbonates from a North American bastnaesite ore source. This achievement validates the versatility of Ucore's patented RapidSX™ rare earth separation technology platform for multiple raw materials with vastly different rare earth element compositions. The technology is chemically identical to conventional solvent extraction but offers faster throughput and a smaller equipment footprint. The company plans to achieve scaled production of Pr-Nd as well as samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, and yttrium at the Louisiana Strategic Metals Complex (SMC).
