[BHP Sees Blast Furnace Decarbonisation as Key Steel Pathway]

Published: Jul 3, 2026 13:30
BHP said blast furnace decarbonisation remains crucial as over 70% of global steel output still uses the BF-BOF route. The company noted that EAF and DRI expansion faces scrap supply and iron ore quality constraints, while BF emissions can be reduced through recycling, hydrogen injection, CCUS and higher-grade raw materials. With new integrated steel plants costing around 4 billion USD and 85% of China and India’s BF capacity less than 20 years old, full replacement remains difficult in the near term.

[SMM Steel] Turkish Rebar Prices Fall Amid Weak Demand as Buyers Remain Sidelined
[Turkey] Domestic and export demand for Turkish rebar remained weak throughout this week, driving its export price down to 575 USD/tonne FOB, mainly due to continuous declines in mill inventories and a lack of firm buy orders, while HRC offers were lowered to 585 USD/tonne FOB. The domestic market remains sluggish with little expectation of a significant recovery in demand this summer. Due to the slow recovery in construction demand, large mills hold ample rebar inventories for delivery, whereas traders are hesitant to restock due to weak cash flow and high borrowing costs.

[SMM Steel] Macro Uncertainties Weigh on Demand, Brazil Steel Prices Weaken
[Brazil] This week, Brazilian steel mills cut sheets & plates prices to stimulate sales, with the domestic HRC price index falling 29.8 USD/tonne to 701.6–759.2 USD/tonne. Meanwhile, the import market was also weakening, with HRC import prices dropping 30 USD/tonne to 620–660 USD/tonne, and hot-dip galvanized import prices plunging 90 USD/tonne to 760–820 USD/tonne. However, due to Brazil's 25% import tariff and concessions from domestic steel mills, buyers held a cautious wait-and-see attitude toward seaborne resources.
