[SMM Steel] India HRC, CRC Prices Hold Stable as Buyers Stay Cautious

Published: Jul 3, 2026 13:23
[India] India’s HRC and CRC prices remained unchanged this week, with Mumbai HRC at around 615 USD/tonne and CRC at around 689 USD/tonne, excluding tax. Trading activity stayed slow amid limited enquiries and weak downstream demand. Buyers continued to purchase only as needed while awaiting monthly mill price revisions. Monsoon disruptions and limited restocking appetite may keep HRC and CRC prices rangebound in the near term."

BHP said blast furnace decarbonisation remains crucial as over 70% of global steel output still uses the BF-BOF route. The company noted that EAF and DRI expansion faces scrap supply and iron ore quality constraints, while BF emissions can be reduced through recycling, hydrogen injection, CCUS and higher-grade raw materials. With new integrated steel plants costing around 4 billion USD and 85% of China and India’s BF capacity less than 20 years old, full replacement remains difficult in the near term.

[SEA] Southeast Asian import billet prices remained under pressure amid limited demand in China and the wider region. China-origin billet export levels slipped by around 5 USD/tonne to 460-465 USD/tonne FOB, making Chinese material more competitive than Indonesian offers. An Indonesian mill cut September-shipment billet offers to 470 USD/tonne FOB, down around 10 USD/tonne w-o-w. In the Philippines, 5SP billet offers stayed near 495 USD/tonne CFR, but buyers are expecting 490 USD/tonne CFR soon, with sales still sporadic."

In yesterday's [SMM Analysis] EU Steel Tariff Wall Doubles to 50%: Reconstructing the New Quota System & In-Depth Analysis of 1A HRC, SMM deeply analyzed the brutal allocation logic of the EU's new 18.35 million tonnes quota. When the "50% tariff wall" and the "melting and pouring" rules completely block traditional tax-free export paths, the global steel supply chain is undergoing a forced reshuffle. Today, we shift our perspective to the ripple effects and macro-level forecasts of this storm.
