[SSAB Pauses Luleå Mill Construction Again Due to Safety Concerns]

Swedish steelmaker SSAB has suspended construction work at its new Luleå steel mill for the second time after personal gas detectors identified low levels of hydrogen cyanide. Although levels remained within safety limits and no illnesses were reported, work in the affected groundwork areas is halted pending a full safety investigation. This follows an earlier suspension on April 3 due to respiratory issues among workers. While the previous incident was attributed to environmental factors rather than gas, the expanded measurement program underscores SSAB's cautious approach to project commissioning as it seeks to maintain its timeline for fossil-free steel production.

On July 21, the total daily trading volume of hot-rolled coil among sample enterprises in SMM's four cities (Shanghai, Lecong, Tianjin, and Ningbo) was 12,000 mt, up 340 mt (+2.8%) day-over-day, down 7.98% YoY on a Gregorian calendar basis, and down 10.98% YoY on a lunar calendar basis.
