[An official from South Korea's presidential office: Samsung and SK Hynix's new chip cluster plan is entering the final stage]
On June 24, Kim Yong-beom, the policy chief at the presidential office, stated that the plan for Samsung Electronics and SK hynix to establish a new semiconductor cluster had entered the final discussion stage, and once finalised, it would be formally announced to the public. Kim noted that due to the "explosive growth" in demand for chips from the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, the construction schedule of the two companies' existing Yongin semiconductor cluster will be significantly advanced. Among them, SK hynix plans to build four fabs in Yongin, and discussions are currently underway to bring forward the completion date of the fourth plant from the originally planned 2044 to 2034.
