[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] EU ETS Reform Debate Intensifies: Big Corporations Benefit While SMEs Bear the Burden

Published: Jun 22, 2026 09:57
Around 40 major German corporations including ArcelorMittal, ThyssenKrupp, and BASF have written to EU leadership calling for a fundamental rethink of climate policy, arguing that EU ETS carbon costs of around EUR 80/tonne are undermining European competitiveness while non-European rivals face little or no equivalent burden. Bavaria's Economy Minister Aiwanger called on the Commission to immediately suspend — and ideally abolish — the EU ETS. Critics note, however, that the same corporations have cumulatively received nearly EUR 464 billion in free ETS certificates since 2005, representing hidden subsidies never available to SMEs, who nonetheless help fund them. The EU Commission plans to present proposals for reorganizing emissions trading next month.

India's Ministry of Mines is expected to unveil an incentive package of approximately US$317 million to develop domestic nickel and lithium processing capacities, according to government sources. [SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Japan Preliminarily Confirms AD of Cold-Rolled Stainless Steel from China & Chinese Taiwan
Japan's government issued a preliminary determination on June 19, stating that nickel-based stainless steel cold-rolled strips and sheets from China and Chinese Taiwan are being dumped at unfairly low prices. Temporary anti-dumping duties are expected to be imposed as early as July, with dumping margins of 3.86–20.71% for Chinese Taiwanese suppliers and 33.29–45.32% for Chinese suppliers. Market expect the practical impact to be limited: Chinese Taiwan exported approximately 124,000 tons of 304 cold-rolled stainless steel in the first five months of this year, of which only around 6400 tons, or 5.16% of total exports, were destined for Japan.
