Continuous Destocking of China's Copper Social Inventory on the Eve of the Dragon Boat Festival [SMM Weekly Data]

Published: Jun 18, 2026 13:57

SMM June 18 News:

Data Brief: As of Thursday, June 18, SMM's national mainstream copper inventories fell by 23,500 mt WoW to 194,300 mt, while total inventories increased by 48,400 mt compared to the 144,800 mt in the same period last year.

Specifically, arrivals of imported and domestic copper remained persistently low, sustaining the destocking trend. In Jiangsu, limited supply arrivals combined with faster downstream warehouse withdrawals drove inventory declines. In Guangdong, weak end-user stockpiling sentiment ahead of the Dragon Boat Festival led to a slight inventory buildup in the region.

Looking ahead, on the supply side, arrivals of imported and domestic copper are expected to remain tight in the near term. On the demand side, as the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, downstream enterprises show subdued stockpiling sentiment, with overall consumption remaining weak. The current spot market is characterized by tight supply and weak demand. It is expected that national copper social inventories will continue destocking next week.

South32 Gets Final Approval for Sierra Gorda Copper Mine Expansion Project
Diversified mining company South32 announced that the fourth grinding line project at the Sierra Gorda open-pit copper mine has received final investment approval following completion of a feasibility study. The study confirmed that this brownfield plant expansion project is expected to deliver attractive returns. By installing a fourth grinding line, expanding crushing and flotation capacity and associated process infrastructure, the project is expected to increase Sierra Gorda mine’s annual processing capacity from 48 million mt to 60 million mt. Sierra Gorda is a large-scale conventional open-pit copper mine located in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile. South32 holds a 45% stake in the mine, with KGHM holding the remaining 55%. The project is expected to achieve first production in FY2030 and reach full capacity in FY2031.

US private-sector employment growth slowed in June but increased for the 12th straight month, signalling that the labour market cooling has not yet turned into a sharp slowdown.Data from ADP Research on Wednesday showed that US private payrolls rose by 98,000 in June, missing economists' expectations for a 119,000 increase, while the prior month’s gain was 122,000.
