Nissan Begins Solid-State Battery Development, Aims to Reduce Costs with Sulfur-based Materials

According to EV media outlet Electrek on June 4 local time, Nissan is launching a project to develop “Cost-effective, Resilient Solid-state Li-S” batteries together with UK battery company Gelion, Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) and the University of Oxford.

The project will run for three years, with a total budget of around GBP 3.4 million, or about USD 4.5 million. Of this, Gelion will receive around GBP 2.4 million, or about USD 3.2 million, in UK government funding.

The key focus of the project is the development of solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries using sulfur-based cathode materials.

[SMM Solid-State Battery Weekly Analysis: All-Solid-State Battery 100 mt-Level Production Lines Concentratedly Commissioned; 2027 Demonstration Vehicle Installations Become Industry Consensus] In the third week of July 2026 (July 10–16, 2026), the solid-state battery industry reached a critical turning point — at the sulphide material end, 100 mt-level production lines will be concentratedly put into operation in Q3, moving the industry from "kg-level transactions" to "mt-level transactions"; at the battery cell end, Zhongke Yuanben (342 Wh/kg), Farasis Energy (500 Wh/kg) and others intensively released new products; at the project end, Changzhou's 550 million yuan final assembly base was signed and Chery's 10 billion yuan R&D centre was established; at the capital end, FAW signed entire industry chain agreements with 10 entities, and Heyuan Lithium Creation completed hundreds of millions of yuan in Series A financing; outside China, Factorial and WeLion respectively expanded into the drone and Eastern Europe energy storage markets. The inaugural year of all-solid-state battery industrialisation verification begins, and 2027 demonstration vehicle installations have already become an industry consensus.
