Tohoku University Team Enhances Solid-State Magnesium Batteries with Tin Addition

Published: May 29, 2026 14:12 (GMT+8)
[SMM Magnesium Express] A Tohoku University research team found that guiding, rather than suppressing, interfacial reactions in solid-state magnesium batteries can significantly enhance performance. By adding tin to form a stable Mg₂Sn phase, the optimized Mg-Sn alloy anode demonstrated stable operation for over 1,300 hours, achieving more than 400 times longer cycling life than pure magnesium. This opens a new direction for magnesium battery materials design.

[Supply-Demand Tug-of-War Persists, Magnesium Ingot Market Under Pressure as Peak Season Falls Short] Some producers in China have periodically released small volumes of low-priced supply, while stockpiling for the two festivals only drove a modest recovery in transactions. With a lack of demand growth both in China and overseas, magnesium prices continue to consolidate on a subdued note, supported by firm pricing and cost floors.

Yongmaotai Plans to Raise $998M for Magnesium Alloy Projects and Expand Robot Component Production
【SMM Magnesium On September 22, Yongmaotai announced that it plans to raise no more than 998 million yuan through a private placement. Of this amount, 520 million yuan will be invested in the intelligent manufacturing project of magnesium alloy precision components. Once the project reaches its designed capacity, it will be able to produce 4.5 million magnesium alloy automotive parts and 350,000 sets of lightweight components for intelligent robots annually. Currently, the company has established more than 20 magnesium alloy die-casting production lines, covering models ranging from 650 to 7000T, and has ordered 10 semi-solid equipment units. It has also established cooperation with major automakers such as XPeng and BYD. With the implementation of the private placement project, the production capacity of magnesium alloy precision manufacturing is expected to accelerate, and lightweight components for robots may become a new growth point.】

Jiangsu Yimeitai Delivers Advanced Magnesium Alloy Production Lines to Zhejiang, Reducing Energy Consumption by 60%
【SMM Magnesium Flash】Recently, Jiangsu Yimeitai officially delivered a batch of 10 full-series magnesium alloy semi-solid forming production lines and supporting automation systems to the Zhejiang market, marking its first large-scale entry into the Zhejiang market. This batch of equipment covers different tonnage models and comes with a complete process plan, enabling no exposure to high-temperature metal liquid, no SF₆ harmful gas, and a 60% reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional processes. With the decline in equipment costs and the improvement in process maturity, magnesium alloy semi-solid forming is penetrating from high-end pilot projects in leading automobile companies to broader civilian manufacturing markets such as automotive and motorcycle parts, and 3C structural components.
