[SMM Zinc Morning Comment: Bullish and Bearish Factors Coexist in Fundamentals, SHFE Zinc Maintains Fluctuating Trend] Overnight, the most-traded SHFE zinc 2607 contract opened at 24,800 yuan/mt. At the beginning of the session, SHFE zinc touched a high of 24,800 yuan/mt. After the opening, SHFE zinc quickly pulled back to near the daily average line, hitting a low of 24,605 yuan/mt. SHFE zinc then moved sideways around the daily average line, eventually closing lower at 24,690 yuan/mt.

SMM News on May 19:

Overnight, LME zinc opened at $3,531/mt. In early trading, LME zinc briefly pulled back and probed a low of $3,495.5/mt. It then fluctuated and rebounded from the lows, touching a high of $3,554/mt during the session. Subsequently, LME zinc fluctuated downward to near the daily moving average and finally closed down at $3,515.5/mt, a decline of $23/mt or 0.65%. Trading volume decreased to 10,662 lots, and open interest increased by 1,071 lots to 244,000 lots. Overnight, LME zinc recorded a bearish candlestick, with the 10-day moving average below providing support. On the macro front, the situation in the Middle East has not yet ended, but the US dollar index retreated from highs, and the downward trend of LME zinc paused. Coupled with LME zinc ingot inventory running persistently low, LME zinc is expected to maintain a fluctuating trend in the short term.

Trading volume decreased to 23,997 lots, and open interest increased by 1,527 lots to 80,561 lots. Overnight, SHFE zinc recorded a bearish candlestick, with the 5-day moving average above forming resistance. On Monday, SMM zinc ingot social inventory continued to accumulate, and consumption continued to drag on zinc price trends. However, zinc concentrate TCs continued to decline, which overall still provided some support for zinc prices. Amid the tug-of-war between longs and shorts, SHFE zinc maintained a fluctuating trend.

Valhalla Resumes Drilling at Alaska’s Sun Project to Expand High-Grade Zinc-Copper-Lead VMS Resources
Valhalla Metals announced that it has resumed resource expansion drilling at its Sun critical and precious metals project in northwestern Alaska. Located at the eastern end of the Ambler Mining District, the project hosts high-grade copper-zinc-lead-silver-gold volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralisation. The 2026 programme will focus on testing strike and depth extensions of the Main Sun and SW Sun deposits. According to a 2021 resource estimate, the Sun project contains 1.71 million tonnes of indicated resources grading 4.32% zinc, 1.48% copper and 1.11% lead, containing approximately 163 million pounds of zinc. It also hosts 9.02 million tonnes of inferred resources grading 4.18% zinc, 1.21% copper and 1.46% lead, containing about 831.3 million pounds of zinc. Previous step-out drilling in 2023 returned 21.4 metres grading 11.03% zinc, 1.31% copper and 3.23% lead, highlighting strong resource expansion potential. Valhalla is also conducting reconnaissance work at the Smucker project ahead of planned drilling in 2027. Smucker hosts a historical resource of 11.84 million tonnes grading 6.6% zinc, 0.94% copper and 2.3% lead. The company acquired full ownership of the core claims from Teck Resources in June, paving the way for the first drilling at the project since 1982.

Arrow Minerals Completes Gravity Survey at Australia’s Yarraloola Project, Targeting Copper-Lead-Zinc Mineralization
Arrow Minerals has completed an infill gravity survey at its Yarraloola Copper Project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The survey covered 791 stations across the Ava, Fraser and Mr Thomas targets and is designed to refine drill targets for a planned exploration campaign later in 2026. The company has also secured funding under the Western Australian Government’s Exploration Incentive Scheme to conduct a detailed electromagnetic survey. The programme will use induced polarisation and fixed-loop electromagnetic techniques to identify potential massive sulphide bodies adjacent to known mineralisation. Results will be integrated with existing magnetic, gravity and geological data to finalise drilling targets. Historical drilling at Yarraloola has intersected polymetallic mineralisation containing copper, silver, lead and zinc. Arrow Minerals completed the acquisition of an 80% interest in the project in June 2026 and is now expanding its exploration programme.
