【SMM Steel】Spanish special steel producer Sidenor is investing €13.6 million to modernize its Basauri plant, enhancing competitiveness in the special steel market. The upgrades cover steel refining processes (replacing natural gas boilers with electric vacuum pumps) and a rolling mill reheating furnace oxygen enrichment system. The new refining technology eliminates natural gas use at this stage, saving ~35,000 MWh of energy annually and reducing Scope 1 emissions by 5%. The company has also successfully tested green hydrogen combustion for ladle heating at the Basauri site.
