SMM May 11 News:

According to SMM, the operating rate of China's copper foil enterprises in April 2026 was 89.75%, up 0.16 percentage points MoM and up 18.24 percentage points YoY. Among them, the operating rate of large enterprises was 93.55%, medium-sized enterprises 71.71%, and small enterprises 74.98%. By specific segment, the operating rate of electronic circuit copper foil was 88.43%, up 2.55 percentage points MoM and up 11.95 percentage points YoY; the operating rate of lithium battery copper foil was 90.43%, down 1.11 percentage points MoM and up 21.48 percentage points YoY. The overall operating rate of the copper foil industry in May 2026 is expected to rise to 91.48%.

Copper Foil Enterprise Operating Rate at 89.75% in April 2026

Industry prosperity remained strong in April, with both lithium battery copper foil and electronic circuit copper foil downstream segments gaining momentum. End-use demand, the ESS sector saw downstream stockpiling ahead of the "630" installation period, with some enterprises ramping up capacity on large battery cell production lines; power battery production also showed steady growth. The traditional consumer electronics industry entered its peak season, AI-related orders remained booming, boosting downstream stocking demand.

Copper Foil Shipments Rose in April

In April, the copper foil industry's finished product inventory/output ratio fell 0.5 percentage points MoM to 10.17%, and the raw material inventory ratio fell 0.36 percentage points MoM to 14.87%. Overall copper foil shipments in April increased 2.37% MoM, with lithium battery copper foil shipments up 1.40% MoM and electronic circuit copper foil shipments up 4.38% MoM. Overall shipments in May are expected to grow 2.91% MoM.

Copper Foil Industry Operating Rate Forecast to Rise to 91.48% in May 2026

SMM forecasts that in May 2026, the overall operating rate of copper foil enterprises will be 91.48%, up 1.74 percentage points MoM and up 19.32 percentage points YoY. The lithium battery copper foil operating rate in May is expected to be 92.55%, up 2.12 percentage points MoM and up 22.16 percentage points YoY. The electronic circuit copper foil operating rate in May is expected to be 89.42%, up 0.98 percentage points MoM and up 13.81 percentage points YoY.

Power and ESS battery production schedules in Q2 are expected to stay high, with growth potentially accelerating further in May. The continued boom in AI-related orders is driving some copper foil capacity to shift toward high-end applications, and under the current peak season effect, stockpiling sentiment in the consumer electronics industry continues to rise. The copper foil industry as a whole shows a trend of both volume and price increases, and the operating rate of copper foil enterprises in May 2026 is expected to exceed 90%.

Chile Allows Codelco to Retain Entire $2.42 Billion 2025 Profit as Copper Output Struggles
According to foreign media reports, Chile's government will allow state-owned copper producer Codelco to reinvest 100% of its 2025 profit, totaling approximately $2.42 billion, marking the first time the company has been permitted to retain all of its annual earnings since its establishment in 1976. The decision provides additional financial capacity for Codelco as it works to stabilise copper production while undertaking several capital-intensive projects aimed at extending the operating lives of its ageing mines. The company has accumulated more than $20 billion in debt, increasing pressure on its balance sheet as investment requirements remain elevated. In recent years, Codelco had typically been permitted to retain around 30% of its profits, with the majority transferred to the Chilean government. The financial support comes amid persistent weakness in Codelco's copper production. Following an internal review, the company revised its 2025 output to 1.308 million tonnes, almost 27,000 tonnes below its previous estimate. The revised figure represents Codelco's lowest annual production in nearly three decades and is approximately 19% below its 2021 output. Codelco's new leadership has indicated that improving profitability and project execution will take priority over pursuing aggressive production targets. The retained earnings are expected to provide greater flexibility to finance the company's investment programme internally, potentially reducing its reliance on additional borrowing while it works to improve operational performance. From a copper-market perspective, Codelco's ability to stabilise and eventually recover production remains significant given that the company accounts for around 5% of global copper supply. Allowing the miner to retain its entire 2025 profit strengthens its capacity to fund mine-renewal projects, but the impact on future copper supply will ultimately depend on whether the additional capital translates into improved project execution and a sustained recovery in production.

PT Freeport Indonesia Develops Kucing Liar Mine for Long-Term Copper and Gold Supply
According to foreign media reports, PT Freeport Indonesia is continuing development of the Kucing Liar underground copper-gold mine within the Grasberg minerals district in Central Papua, with initial mining targeted for 2029 and production expected to ramp up thereafter. The project is being developed as a long-term source of replacement supply as production from the Deep Mill Level Zone declines. Development of the underground deposit has been underway for several years and requires substantial investment in mine access and supporting underground infrastructure. Recent reports indicate that approximately $1.4 billion has already been invested, with a further roughly $4 billion expected through 2033 as development progresses. At full operating rates, Kucing Liar is expected to process approximately 130,000 tonnes of ore per day and produce around 750 million lb of copper annually, equivalent to roughly 340,000 tonnes, alongside approximately 735,000 oz of gold. Freeport-McMoRan currently estimates that the deposit could contribute more than 8 billion lb of copper through 2041. From a copper-market perspective, Kucing Liar represents a significant source of prospective long-term mine supply from the Grasberg district. Its development is particularly important because it is intended to help offset declining output from mature underground areas and sustain Freeport Indonesia's large-scale copper production over the longer term.

[SMM Analysis: U.S. Restricts Critical Mineral Scrap Exports — Could Copper Scrap Be Next?]The U.S. has imposed a 100% domestic sales requirement on black mass and tungsten scrap, signaling tighter control over strategic secondary resources. Copper scrap is not yet included, but SMM expects more high-grade scrap to stay in the U.S. as local processing capacity expands, tightening global supply and supporting high scrap coefficients.
