Copper Inventories in China's Major Regions Resumed Destocking in the First Week After the Holiday [SMM Weekly Data]

Published: May 8, 2026 15:06

SMM May 8 News:

Data Brief: As of Friday, May 8, SMM copper inventories across major regions nationwide decreased by 1,400 mt WoW from the post-holiday level to 251,500 mt, with total inventories up 131,400 mt compared to the same period last year (120,100 mt).

Specifically, in Shanghai, imported and domestic copper continued to flow into warehouses, with inventory maintaining a buildup trend; in Jiangsu, overall arrivals were relatively low, and coupled with gradually recovering consumption after the holiday, inventory continued to decline; in Guangdong, although domestic copper arrivals saw steady recovery, they remained at relatively low levels overall, and with downstream processing enterprises resuming normal operations and consumption after the holiday, regional inventory saw some destocking.

Looking ahead, supply side, imported copper arrivals are expected to show incremental growth, and domestic copper arrivals are also expected to rebound overall; demand side, processing enterprises are gradually resuming production after the holiday, with marginal demand recovery, but under the suppression of elevated copper prices, downstream procurement and consumption remain mediocre. The current market presents a pattern of limited supply increases and slight consumption recovery, and China's copper cathode social inventory is expected to maintain a slight destocking trend next week.

During the day, market sources reported that Freeport-McMoRan had postponed the full production resumption timeline for its Grasberg copper mine in Indonesia to early 2028, one year later than previous expectations. According to SMM, a Freeport representative responded that the Grasberg copper mine's production resumption status was consistent with the official disclosure made during the Q1 earnings call. The specific plan is as follows: restart Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) production block 1S in Q2 2027, and restart production block 1C before the end of 2027. The market should not over-interpret this, and all parties are advised to monitor whether there are further updated statements in the company's subsequent disclosure documents.

Asian Copper Scrap Squeeze Keeps Coefficients Firm; No. 2 Copper Coefficients See "Abnormal" Spike
Asian copper scrap supply is severely tight due to decline in the volume and quality of US exports due to recovering domestic consumption; depleted inventories from early-year copper price volatility; and China's tax compliance pressures restricting local scrap flows, which intensifies regional competition for imports. Boosted by bullish hoarding, pricing coefficients have defied expected corrections despite surging copper prices. Bare Bright Copper is currently converging around 98.5%, with No. 1 Copper at 97%-97.5%. Notably, No. 2 Copper coefficients have spiked "abnormally" to 95%-96%. This anomaly is primarily driven by high precious metal prices, as scrap batches rich in gold and silver impurities command high premiums, lifting the overall No. 2 Copper pricing benchmark.
