On April 13,  an SMM team, comprised of Jianhua Ye, Industry Research Director, Chundi Feng, Expert at Industry Research Institute, and Jenny Wu, Copper & Tin Overseas Marketing Manager, paid a visit to ZCCM INVESTMENTS HOLDINGS PLC (ZCCM-IH). The delegation was warmly welcomed by Chitalu Kabalika, Manager - Market Research & Trade Strategy at ZCCM-IH, Kambole Mwanakatwe, Precious Metals & Minerals Investment Analyst, etc.

During this visit, both parties leveraged their respective core business strengths and conducted in-depth discussions on the methodology behind SMM's copper price and copper concentrates price indices, their influence on industry pricing, and the transmission mechanisms in international markets. They explored the reference value of these price indices for Zambian copper ore trade and mining project investment. Discussions also covered ZCCM-IH's copper mine asset operations, resource reserves, capacity planning, and other topics, jointly examining the local copper mining industry's supply-demand pattern, cost landscape, and medium and long-term development trends. In addition, both parties exchanged views on potential cooperation directions, including copper industry chain information sharing, joint market trend analysis, and ex-China mining resource collaboration.

This visit effectively connected the business synergies between both parties, deepened mutual understanding and industry consensus, and laid a solid communication foundation for subsequent positive interactions in copper industry data services, market research, and resource collaboration, as well as for exploring diversified cooperation opportunities and pursuing mutual benefits.

Africa Critical Minerals Forum 2026

SMM is also thrilled to announce that the Africa Critical Minerals Forum 2026 is scheduled to be held on September 15–16, 2026 in Lusaka, Zambia. The conference will bring together industry leaders, investors, policymakers, and technology providers from across the globe to explore the future of copper, cobalt and Tin—key drivers of the global energy transition. With Zambia home to some of the world's most significant copper and cobalt resources, and with Africa holding crucial tin reserves—particularly in the Central African Tin Belt spanning the DRC and Rwanda—this summit offers a unique platform to discuss cutting-edge mining technologies, sustainable practices, investment opportunities, and supply chain strategies. Attendees will engage in high-level dialogues on topics ranging from ESG compliance and renewable energy integration to logistics optimization and community-driven development.

We look forward to your joining us at the Africa Critical Minerals Forum 2026 and jointly shaping the future of Africa’s critical minerals industry.

Overseas Copper Scrap Supply Remains Tight, with Payability Edging Higher Alongside Copper Prices
Recently, overseas copper scrap payability has not declined despite a slight increase in copper prices. Instead, supported by persistently tight overseas copper scrap supply, offers have moved slightly higher in tandem with copper prices. Currently, overseas Millberry offers remain at a high range of 98.5%-99%, which is already close to the upper level acceptable to traders. Payability for No.1 copper and No.2 copper scrap has also edged up by around 0.2 percentage points from previous levels. The traditional pricing logic of “higher copper prices leading to lower copper scrap payability” is gradually weakening. On the one hand, overseas copper scrap generation remains limited, and spot availability continues to be tight. On the other hand, competitive procurement of recycled copper raw materials from China, India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East is still ongoing. With no significant increase in supply expected in the near term, sellers continue to show strong price support even as copper prices edge higher, keeping overseas copper scrap payability elevated with a slight upward bias.
