ECB Board Member Suggests Caution on Rate Hikes Amid Iran Conflict Uncertainties

Published: Apr 19, 2026 21:56
ECB Executive Board member De Marco noted that, given the uncertainties arising from the Iran conflict, it would be prudent for the ECB to adopt a wait-and-see approach and hold off for a while before raising interest rates. Currently, investors are broadly betting that the ECB will raise interest rates twice this year, with each hike being 0.25 percentage points, and these expectations appear to have a certain degree of reasonableness. However, implementing a rate hike at the next meeting may be premature, not enough to justify such a decision.
