Tight Raw Material Supply Combined with Copper Price Disruptions, Brass Billet Operating Rate Expected to Continue Declining [SMM Brass Billet Market Weekly Review]

Published: Apr 10, 2026 00:31

This week (4.3-4.9), the operating rate of the brass billet industry was recorded at 54.71%, down 0.45 percentage points WoW. Downstream demand from the refrigeration and heat dissipation sectors still provided some support, but recycled brass raw materials supply was tight, pushing enterprise raw material inventory to pull back slightly to 4.37 days. Next week (4.10-4.16), affected by copper price fluctuations, enterprise orders are expected to shrink, compounded by the continued tight recycled brass raw material supply, and the industry operating rate is expected to decline 1.09 percentage points WoW to 53.62%.

[SMM Copper Flash] High Diesel Power Generation Costs in DRC Put SX-EW Copper Smelters Under Pressure
According to SMM's on-site survey, diesel prices in the DRC have reached above $3.2/liter. Based on the conversion rate of 1 liter of diesel generating 3 kWh of electricity, diesel power generation costs in the DRC are around $1/kWh. Combined with the sharp rise in sulphuric acid prices, this has brought enormous cost pressure to SX-EW copper smelters that need to purchase ore externally, with some smelters reporting they are operating at a loss.
