[SMM PV News] 'PPC' Completes 2.1 GW Solar Cluster on Greek Mine Sites

Published: Apr 9, 2026 09:38
Greece's Public Power Corp ('PPC') has completed a massive 2,130 MW solar cluster on former lignite mines in northern Greece. Generating 3.15 TWh annually—about 6% of the country's electricity consumption—the cluster features the 940 MW Amyntaio complex and the 550 MW Phoebe plant. 'PPC' is also rapidly deploying storage in the region, having already completed 98 MW/196 MWh of battery energy storage systems ('BESS'), with another 50 MW/200 MWh 'BESS' and two large pumped-hydro projects underway. This transforms the region into Europe's largest photovoltaic hub, supporting Greece's milestone of 11.5 GW cumulative solar capacity by the end of 2025.
