Cable Resumption Steadily Advances, Demand Recovery Awaits Yuanxiao [SMM Wire and Cable Market Weekly Review]

Published: Feb 27, 2026 13:31

This week (February 20–26), the SMM copper wire and cable enterprise operating rate was 27.72%, up 12.52 percentage points WoW. Since the eighth day of the first lunar month after the holiday, most wire and cable enterprises have resumed work gradually, but affected by the lagging recovery of end-users, they have not yet fully reached full production, with production mainly focused on executing pre-holiday orders on hand. By end-use sector, order structure showed significant divergence: orders from the power sector such as State Grid and China Southern Grid provided strong support, resulting in relatively good production schedules; orders from construction, communications, and other sectors performed weakly, with overall demand still in a rebound phase. Inventory side, after resuming work, enterprises mainly restocked cautiously, so raw material inventory this week increased 4.24% WoW; for finished product inventories, although enterprises prioritized inventory consumption, due to slow cargo pick-up by end-users, only a slight destocking was achieved, down 2.29% WoW. Looking ahead to next week, after the Lantern Festival, end-use industries will gradually resume work, and the pace of order release is expected to accelerate. SMM expects that next week (February 27–March 5) the copper wire and cable operating rate will increase 30.64 percentage points WoW to 58.36%, up 1.25 percentage points YoY compared to the second week after resumption last year.

Chile's Water Crisis Threatens Atacama's Copper and Lithium Mining Amid 14-Year Drought
Chile’s most pressing crisis at present is the issue of water resources. The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the driest regions in the world and also the core area for copper and lithium ore extraction. The local area has experienced a drought for as long as 14 years, and reservoir storage has fallen to only about 30%. For miners, water resources are not a secondary issue, but an indispensable key production factor in such processes as ore processing, dust suppression, and equipment cooling. The decline in ore grade has further exacerbated the predicament

Trump Adjusts Metal Tariffs, Applies 50% Rate to Consumer Prices Under Section 232, Details Unclear
US President Trump adjusted the national security tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum, and copper, lowering the tariff rates on derivative products made from these metals, streamlining compliance procedures, and preventing the declared value of imports from being understated.A senior Trump administration official said that, under a proclamation signed by Trump, the US would continue to maintain a 50% import tariff on imports of metal commodities such as steel, aluminum, and copper pursuant to Section 232 of the Trade Act of 1974, but would apply this rate to the price paid by US consumers. It is currently unclear how the selling price—and the resulting tariffs—would be determined.
