SMM News January 31: In January 2026, national primary lead production continued its upward trend, increasing by 2.85 percentage points MoM and rising by 17.89 percentage points YoY.
It is understood that in January, several medium and large-scale primary lead smelters resumed production after maintenance, mainly concentrated in regions such as southwest and east China, leading to a significant overall supply increase. Meanwhile, since the beginning of January, lead prices have held up well, coupled with by-product silver and other prices repeatedly hitting record highs, boosting smelters' production enthusiasm. Even though some smelters in south and central China experienced unexpected production cuts due to raw material undersupply during the period, this did not alter the upward trend in primary lead production for the month, with the MoM increase reaching nearly 10,000 mt.
Looking ahead to February, as February (calendar month) has only 28 days, resulting in fewer working days compared to a normal month, and with the Chinese New Year falling in mid-February, some lead smelters in southwest and central China plan to conduct equipment maintenance during this period. The maintenance is expected to last from half a month to one month, which will drag down primary lead production for the month, causing a reversal to a decline. Additionally, lead-acid battery market demand is weak this year, and downstream enterprises' customary stockpiling for the Spring Festival has been lackluster, leading to an accumulation of finished product inventories at lead smelters and a simultaneous rise in social inventory, with spot cargo transactions sluggish. Furthermore, at the end of January, by-product silver and other prices experienced sharp fluctuations, including a historic plunge, which also dampened smelters' production enthusiasm. Overall, SMM expects primary lead production in February to decline by more than 12 percentage points MoM.
