Chile’s state-owned development agency Corfo has awarded up to $5.8 million to two research projects focused on direct lithium extraction (DLE) and rare earth recovery to boost mining innovation and create new business lines.

The first project will receive up to $1.9 million over a maximum of two years to identify and validate direct lithium extraction technologies suited to brines from Chile’s salt flats and saline lagoons. The program aims to design a testing platform and generate early technical evidence under Chilean operating conditions.

A second initiative will receive up to $3.9 million over three years to develop sustainable solutions for recovering rare earth elements. The project will test leaching and bioleaching processes under the supervision of the same piloting centre. Corfo said Chile holds at least 46,000 tonnes of vanadium, 16,000 tonnes of cobalt and hundreds of tonnes of rare earths in mining liabilities, making the recovery of value from tailings, waste dumps and slags a strategic priority.

Lithium momentum

Both projects fall under Corfo’s R&D Challenges program, launched more than a year ago, which co-finances up to 80% of total project costs using funds generated from leasing mining concessions in the Salar de Atacama. The agency said the work supports a circular economy approach by turning environmental liabilities into economic assets through reprocessing and technology.

The funding comes as activity around lithium extraction accelerates in Chile. Late last year, Codelco and SQM agreed to form Nova Andino Litio, a joint venture that will operate in the Atacama Salt Flat until 2060 and consolidate lithium exploration, production and marketing under existing and future contracts with Corfo.

Albemarle (NYSE: ALB) also completed testing of its own DLE technology in Chile in December, reporting lithium recovery above 94% after more than 3,000 hours of pilot operation and water reuse of up to 85%.

The company invested $30 million in the pilot plant and a further $216 million in a salt recovery facility in the Atacama. While industry experts say DLE could be more efficient and environmentally friendly than conventional methods, the technology has yet to be proven at commercial scale in Chile.

Li Auto Battery Has Been Installed in Li L8
Following its self-developed chip, Li Auto has once again strengthened its core technology layout. Its self-developed “Li Auto” brand battery is now officially installed in vehicles, with the first model being the newly launched Li L8. In battery R&D, Li Auto and Sunwoda have partnered through a joint venture, with a clear division of labor and well-defined responsibilities. At the R&D level, Li Auto leads the entire process, defining the full technology chain from the battery cell level (including material formulation and structural systems) to the overall battery pack design, as well as the underlying development of the BMS (Battery Management System). At the manufacturing level, the two parties have established a comprehensive operational collaboration mechanism: the chairman of the joint venture is appointed by the Li Auto team, and the overall R&D design, manufacturing processes, and quality standards are uniformly specified and controlled by Li Auto. During the specific manufacturing execution phase, the two parties leverage Sunwoda’s mature manufacturing platform and combine their respective areas of strength to advance collaboratively.

Metals.io opens cobalt, nickel to retail investors
London-based metals.io has added tokenized cobalt and nickel to its Tezos-based trading platform, opening access to commodities that have traditionally been available only to industrial buyers and large trading houses. The company said Thursday it purchased and tokenized 7 tonnes of the metals, launching xCo and xNi tokens that provide investors with ownership of physical metal held in secure storage facilities. The platform uses a trust structure combined with blockchain-based smart contracts to allow investors to buy, hold and trade the assets without the warehousing, financing and minimum lot-size requirements typically associated with physical commodity markets. “The rapid growth of AI, an explosion of manufacturing capacity in emerging markets and a host of other technological developments have created demand for the metals and minerals that power industries from automotive manufacturing to aerospace,” Ben Elvidge, lead for metals.io and head of alternative assets at Trilitech, said in a statement. “With the launch of metals.io and the dawn of tokenization, we’re able to streamline access to these essential commodities, making them available to a new profile of buyer and introducing new routes to market for suppliers.”

The SCIO released the overall targets of the 15th FYP for New Energy System, aiming to initially establish a clean, low-carbon, secure, and efficient energy system by 2030. China's installed power capacity has surpassed 4 billion kW and is projected to reach 5.4 billion kW by 2030. Renewable energy will exceed 50% of the total capacity to become the mainstay, while non-fossil generation will hit 50% as the main power supply. Coal and oil consumption will also peak by then.
