AI Data Centers as a "Super Engine" for 2026 Copper Demand

Published: Jan 5, 2026 11:58
A January 2026 report by Morgan Stanley forecasts that global data center copper consumption will rise to 740,000 tonnes in 2026 (approx. 2.1% of total demand) and challenge the 1 million tonne mark by 2027, driven by the AI infrastructure boom. This explosive "new copper mine" demand makes "urban mining" for copper scrap essential, further intensifying competition for high-grade scrap copper.

Copper Cathode Rod Producers' Operating Rate Falls 2.96 Pct WoW Amid High Prices and Weak Demand
[SMM Copper Cathode Rod Flash] The operating rate of copper cathode rod producers fell 2.96 percentage points WoW this week. High copper prices combined with the price spread between futures contracts fueled a strong wait-and-see sentiment among downstream players, with enterprises receiving limited new orders and proactively lowering production loads. Downstream sectors such as wire and cable and enamelled wire entered their traditional off-season, and seasonal demand weakness further weighed on operating performance.
