[SMM Iron & Steel] EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) Enters Definitive Regime

Published: Jan 05, 2026 10:06 (GMT+8)
On January 1, 2026, the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) officially transitioned from its reporting-only phase to its definitive regime. Importers of iron, steel, and specific downstream products are now required to purchase CBAM certificates to cover the carbon emissions embedded in their goods, effectively linking import costs to the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) price. This structural shift is expected to impose a financial burden on high-emission producers, particularly those utilizing traditional blast furnace routes in India and Southeast Asia, while incentivizing the global trade of green steel and Direct Reduced Iron (DRI).

Liuzhou Iron & Steel, Huawei deploy Xuantie steel AI model targeting 80% coverage
Liuzhou Iron & Steel and Huawei commercially deployed Guangxi’s first steel-industry foundation model, Xuantie, on Huawei Cloud Stack, ModelArts and Pangu. It spans 20+ scenarios in ironmaking, steelmaking, rolling, logistics, environment and safety under a 「20+N」 framework. Autonomous 5G locomotives on a 2-km network cut molten-iron temperature loss by 35°C, saving 60,000 tonnes of standard coal and 262,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. An LF refining model shortens refining by 2 minutes and cuts crude steel cost by about 0.73 USD/tonne. A slab-grouping model processes 1,000+ complex orders in minutes, raising plate yield by 1–2% and residual slab yield above 91%; reinforcement-learning scheduling lifts overall efficiency by 8.5%. The company targets over 80% intelligent coverage within three years.

[Fortescue holds full-year guidance; September-quarter shipments at 46.8 Mt]
Fortescue is holding its full-year iron ore shipment guidance. The miner shipped 46.8 Mt of iron ore in the September quarter while booking sales of 42.9 Mt, leaving 3.9 Mt unsold in stockpiles, which the company expects to grow further. Pricing and offtake negotiations with China Mineral Resources Group (CMRG) remain stalled and have already created a material inventory overhang. If resolution of the contract issues with the Chinese side drags on, mine scheduling, blending strategies and short-term logistics at its Pilbara operations may be affected. [SMM Iron Ore]
