Samsung SDI America, the U.S. subsidiary of Samsung SDI, has decided to convert part of the production lines at StarPlus Energy (SPE)—its joint venture with Stellantis in Indiana—to produce prismatic LFP cells for battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Currently, out of the four production lines at SPE’s first plant, one line is dedicated to EV batteries, while another produces nickel–cobalt–aluminum (NCA)-based batteries for ESS applications. Samsung SDI is adjusting its operating plans for the remaining two lines with the assumption that they will also be shifted toward ESS and LFP production. These lines are scheduled to be brought online sequentially starting in the fourth quarter of next year.
