China to Adjust Import Tariff Rates on Lead-Acid Batteries in 2026

[Changes to Conventional Tariffs on Lead-Acid Batteries in 2026] According to an announcement by the Ministry of Finance, effective January 1, 2026, China will adjust import tariff rates and categories for certain goods. Under the implementation rates for free trade agreements and preferential trade arrangements, the conventional tariff rates for lead-acid batteries for starting piston engines and other lead-acid batteries remained unchanged for some countries and regions compared to 2025, while rates were reduced for others.
For starter lead-acid batteries, the import tariff rates were reduced in 2026 for the following countries and regions: RCEP member states (ASEAN: 8% to 7.5%, Australia: 8% to 7.5%, Japan: 8.1% to 7.6%); South Korea (4.5% to 4%); Nicaragua (8% to 7%); Ecuador (8.8% to 8.2%); and Serbia (6% to 4%). For other lead-acid batteries, the import tariff rates were reduced for: RCEP member states (ASEAN: 6% to 5%, Australia: 6% to 5%, Japan: 6.4% to 5.5%, South Korea: 6% to 5%); Nicaragua (8% to 7%); and Serbia (6% to 4%).

[Developments in the Outside-China Lead Market] According to Notice No. 26,094-96 issued by the LME, the suspension of trading in the UMICORE 99.99, 99.985, and 99.97 lead brands produced by Umicore has been lifted, and these brands will continue to be used for warrant transactions on the London Metal Exchange (LME). It was reported that, according to Notice No. 26 005-007 issued by the LME on January 2, 2026, effective April 2, 2026, the three lead ingot brands produced by Umicore will no longer be accepted for warranting by the London Metal Exchange (LME).
