Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On December 23, BYD announced a new partnership with lubricant major Mobil to introduce a co-branded engine oil line designed specifically for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

Marketed under the name "BYD Mobil Hybrid Dedicated," the product range is optimized for BYD's DM-i PHEV-dedicated platform and is positioned as a purpose-built lubrication solution for hybrid powertrains.

Although BYD exited pure internal combustion engine vehicle production in March 2022, engine oil remains essential for its large and growing PHEV portfolio. As a leader in China's PHEV market, BYD noted that hybrid engines operate under far more complex conditions than conventional gasoline vehicles. Frequent engine start-stop cycles, short-duration low-temperature operation and intermittent high-load running place greater and more specialized demands on lubricant performance.

To address these challenges, BYD and Mobil jointly developed the PHEV-specific oil series around the unique operating profiles of PHEV engines, with particular emphasis on wear protection, cleanliness and long-term stability. The flagship product carries a 0W-20 viscosity grade and is claimed to deliver significantly higher anti-wear performance than prevailing industry benchmarks, along with markedly improved resistance to emulsification. This focus is intended to mitigate moisture-related issues common in hybrid engines during short, low-temperature trips, ensuring consistent lubrication under varied and demanding conditions.

The new oil range is positioned to support the highly dynamic and variable operating environments typical of PHEVs, spanning urban commuting, short trips and high-load driving scenarios. By tailoring lubrication performance to hybrid-specific needs, BYD and Mobil aim to enhance efficiency, durability and peace of mind for PHEV owners, underscoring how electrification is reshaping not only vehicle architectures but also the entire automotive supply chain.

World's First Mass-Produced Sodium-Ion Battery Passenger Vehicle Officially Unveiled
On February 5, Changan Automobile unveiled its global sodium-ion battery strategy, and the world's first mass-produced sodium-ion battery passenger vehicle was officially introduced. Test data shows that the vehicle equipped with CATL's sodium-ion battery delivers nearly three times the discharge power compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate vehicles with the same battery capacity under -30°C conditions. In extreme cold environments of -40°C, it maintains over 90% capacity retention, and it can still discharge stably even at the extreme low temperature of -50°C.
