Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On December 21, FAW Toyota officially rolled out the updated Corolla onto the Chinese market. The new model represents a mid-cycle refresh of the 12th-generation Corolla, arriving more than six years after the current generation first entered the market.

The refreshed Corolla is offered in four variants. While the official suggested retail prices range from 126,800 yuan to 149,800 yuan, FAW Toyota is also promoting a more aggressive direct-sales pricing strategy, with transaction prices starting as low as 99,000 yuan and topping out at 118,000 yuan.

Long regarded as a perennial best-seller in the compact sedan segment, the Corolla has been a fixture in the Chinese market for more than two decades.

The Corolla's trajectory closely mirrors the evolution of China's passenger car market. The ninth-generation model was introduced in 2004 under the name "Hua Guan," laying the groundwork for mass-market success. From the tenth generation onward, Toyota adopted the global "Corolla" nameplate and pioneered the strategy of selling two generations in parallel to broaden price coverage. In 2015, the Corolla Hybrid marked Toyota's first locally launched hybrid passenger car, signaling its push toward electrification. That journey continued in 2019 with the arrival of the 12th-generation Corolla built on Toyota's TNGA architecture, which delivered a comprehensive upgrade across design, dynamics, and technology.

The latest update builds on this legacy with a series of tangible enhancements aimed at keeping the Corolla competitive in a rapidly changing market.

Styling has been refreshed with a more athletic interpretation of Toyota's latest family design language. A 50 mm extension of the wheelbase, now measuring 2,750 mm, translates into noticeably improved rear-seat legroom. Inside, the cabin places greater emphasis on digitalization, featuring an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch central touchscreen, with support for both Apple CarPlay and Huawei HiCar connectivity.

Powertrain options include a conventional gasoline variant powered by a 2.0-liter engine, as well as a hybrid version equipped with Toyota's fifth-generation intelligent hybrid system. The hybrid model delivers fuel consumption as low as 4.13 liters per 100 kilometers, underscoring Toyota's continued focus on efficiency.

All variants now come standard with the Toyota Pilot driver assistance suite, elevating the Corolla's safety and advanced driver-assistance offering across the lineup.

The update comes at a time when competition in China's compact sedan segment has reached unprecedented intensity. By combining class-above interior space, a more comprehensive set of smart features, and highly competitive direct-sales pricing, the new Corolla signals Toyota's determination to defend its core market position.

Whether the Corolla can continue to anchor the mainstream family sedan market amid accelerating electrification and intelligent vehicle trends—leveraging both its long-standing reputation and renewed product strength—will be closely watched in the months ahead.
