[SMM PV News] Hungary to host 450 MW solar plant using back-contact modules

Published: Dec 22, 2025 17:20
Solarpro is currently constructing Hungary’s largest photovoltaic facility, a 450 MW plant in Heves county, utilizing nearly 700,000 modules supplied by Chinese manufacturer Longi. The project is projected to generate approximately 470 GWh of electricity annually, sufficient to power roughly 106,000 households, while offsetting an estimated 415,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. This development expands on a previous partnership between the two companies, following the completion of a 176 MW solar park in Romania in 2024.

The facility will utilize Longi’s Hi-MO 9 modules, which feature back-contact technology designed to improve efficiency and minimize microcracking. Solarpro notes that this will be Europe's largest back-contact solar installation, offering stable performance under challenging environmental conditions such as heat and variable cloud cover. Both Solarpro and Longi executives emphasized that the project sets a new technological standard for high-efficiency clean energy in the region.

Reflecting a broader industry trend toward this technology, French startup Carbon recently announced a collaboration with Longi to adopt back-contact technology for its upcoming gigawatt-scale factory. Pivoting away from in-house TOPCon development, Carbon plans to establish a 700 MW pilot assembly plant in southern France to test industrial processes and supply chains while awaiting clearer regulations regarding European solar manufacturing eligibility.
