Google plans to merge its two major operating systems, Android and ChromeOS, to launch a new generation of Android-based "Aluminum OS." The system's name is derived from the aluminum material commonly used in Google devices and is positioned for the high-end market, with an expected official release in 2026. At the 2025 Qualcomm Summit, Google's hardware chief confirmed a collaboration with Qualcomm to develop a unified AI system for the PC market, integrating AI technologies such as Gemini.
Aluminum OS will cover various form factors, including laptops and tablets, and will be divided into different price tiers, differentiating it from Chromebooks, which target the budget market.
