[SMM Tin Express: China's Scientists Achieve New Breakthrough in Next-Generation Optical Computing Chip Research]

According to Jinshi Data on December 19, researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University have recently achieved a breakthrough in the field of next-generation optical computing chips, realizing for the first time an all-optical computing chip that supports large-scale semantic media generation models. The related findings were published in the journal *Science* on December 19.

“So-called optical computing can be understood as not letting electrons run in transistors, but allowing light to propagate within the chip, using changes in the optical field to perform computations. Light inherently possesses the advantages of high speed and parallelism, and is therefore regarded as a crucial direction for overcoming the bottlenecks of computing power and energy consumption,” said Chen Yitong, assistant professor at the School of Integrated Circuits of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and co-author of the paper. He noted that applying optical computing to generative AI is not straightforward; existing all-optical computing chips are mainly limited to small-scale classification tasks, and optoelectronic cascading or multiplexing would severely undermine the speed of optical computing. Enabling next-generation optical computing chips to run complex generative models is a globally recognized challenge in the field of intelligent computing.
