Vedanta's Lanjigarh Refinery Expansion Elevates India's Alumina Capacity

Vedanta's Lanjigarh refinery reached a capacity of 5 million mt per year, bringing India's total alumina capacity close to 13 million mt per year. Vedanta stated that it completed the investment expansion of the alumina refinery, and the plant's capacity has now been increased to 5 million mt per annum (MTPA).

After the expansion, the Lanjigarh refinery's capacity reached 5 million mt per year, making it the world's second-largest alumina refinery outside China. The capacity increase has also reshaped India's alumina industry landscape, with the country's total alumina refining capacity now approaching 13 million mt per year, elevating India to the third-largest globally. Lanjigarh alone contributed 38% of the production, making it India's largest single-site plant.

Multiple end-user sectors exhibited rapid demand growth, with infrastructure and building materials remaining key drivers, while railways, natural gas vehicles and EVs, renewable energy, and aerospace are capturing larger shares. The expanded refinery directly addresses this demand mix. The effect of the capacity upgrade was reflected in production data, with alumina output in November reaching 254,000 mt, the highest monthly level on record for the plant. Trading volume was 8% higher than in October and 68% higher than the same period last year.
