Recently, Mineral Resources (MinRes) held a groundbreaking ceremony for its Lamb Creek iron ore project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, marking the official start of the project's construction phase.
MinRes stated that Lamb Creek is an open-pit iron ore project with a planned annual capacity of approximately 7.5 million mt and an expected mine life of about five years. The project will include the construction of crushing facilities and an approximately 16-kilometer ore haul road. Iron ore products are planned to be shipped through the Port of Hedland. The company expects the project to achieve its first iron ore shipment in Q4 of the 2026 fiscal year (April 1, 2026, to June 30, 2026).
Regarding the overall capacity arrangement, MinRes indicated that upon commissioning, the Lamb Creek project is expected to extend the current production cycle of the Pilbara Hub by more than five years and improve cost conditions. The current operating capacity of the Wonmunna iron ore mine is approximately 5 million mt per year. The company stated that as the Lamb Creek project progresses, mining operations at the Wonmunna iron ore mine will simultaneously enter the closure phase.
It is reported that MinRes released the latest Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves report for the Pilbara Hub in August this year. The report shows that the hub has iron ore Mineral Resources of 161 million mt with an average iron grade of 57.0%, and Ore Reserves of 51 million mt with an average iron grade of 57.5%.
