[SMM PV News] India’s Tata Power plans solar ingot and wafer plant

Published: Dec 19, 2025 09:43
Tata Power is set to significantly deepen its supply chain integration by constructing a massive 10 GW solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in India, representing a capital investment of approximately INR 65 billion ($720.7 million). This strategic move addresses a critical gap in the domestic market, where upstream capacity severely lags behind downstream production; as of June 2025, India possessed only 5.3 GW of wafer capacity compared to 120 GW for modules . The new plant is designed to secure raw materials for Tata Power’s existing 4.8 GW cell and module portfolio while also serving external producers. With discussions for state incentives underway and expectations of support from the federal Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, the company aims to capitalize on the high barriers to entry in this technology-intensive sector, positioning itself to meet a domestic demand for ingots and wafers that is projected to exceed 50 GW by 2030.
