[SMM PV News] UK Achieves New Annual Record for Solar Energy Production

Published: Dec 19, 2025 09:36
According to mid-December data from grid operator NESO, solar power achieved a new annual generation record in Great Britain in 2025, accounting for 6.3% of the country's total electricity mix. The sector generated 18,314 GWh, marking a significant 30% increase over the previous year. This surge was driven by a combination of robust infrastructure growth, including 1.9 GW of new capacity that brought the provisional total to 20.7 GW, and a surge in residential rooftop installations. Furthermore, favorable weather played a critical role; the Met Office reported the sunniest year since records began in 1910, with a particularly intense spring season boosting irradiance. Solar Energy UK CEO Chris Hewett highlighted that the industry is no longer a niche player, noting that solar now produces six times more energy than hydropower. He predicted continued record-breaking performance as the nation moves toward a target of 60 GW of capacity over the coming decade.
