Ford plans to shift its US battery manufacturing capacity to a new battery energy storage business. These energy storage systems will be used to power data centers and help stabilize power grid demand. Ford stated that the battery energy storage systems are expected to begin delivery in 2027, and the company plans to build a production site with an annual capacity of 20 GWh. Ford will invest approximately $2 billion in the new business over the next two years. According to the plan, Ford will repurpose the existing capacity at its Kentucky plant. The plant will utilize technology licensed from CATL to produce LFP batteries, while also manufacturing battery energy storage system modules and 20-foot DC container systems.
