【SMM Aluminium Flash News】European Commission New Extensions for CBAM

Published: Dec 17, 2025 17:41
The European Commission has just done a press conference regarding CBAM and related matters on 9:30 am, 17th December 2025 CET (4:30 pm Beijing time, 17th December 2025). In the brief press conference, some details regarding CBAM's new extensions were revealed. Firstly, more than 180 products which fall mainly into the iron & steel and aluminium sectors were incorporated into CBAM, which includes wires, car doors and washing machines. This was to increase competitiveness of European products outside of the EU's borders, and to prevent EU's products from being overly expensive when exported out. Secondly, up to half a billion Euros will be placed into a "Decarbonisation Fund", which will be used to support European manufacturers and exporters who are the most affected by CBAM changes and cover remaining carbon leakage risks, lasting up until the revision of the policy after 2 years. Lastly, no countries will be exempted in 2026 from CBAM until they are able to produce a local equivalent to CBAM and link up with the EU, which includes countries such as the USA, the UK and Ukraine. In the press conference, it was also stated that circumventions and safeguards against loopholes for import/export in CBAM will also be addressed, details which will be released alongside official documents at an unspecified time.
