Great Wall Motor teams up with CAIT to launch powertrain, chassis innovation lab

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On December 9, Great Wall Motor Company Limited ("GWM") announced the establishment of a Powertrain and Chassis Technology Innovation Joint Laboratory with China Automotive Information Technology Co., Ltd. ("CAIT"), which is affiliated to China Automotive Technology & Research Center ("CATARC").

The new lab will concentrate on next-generation powertrains, intelligent chassis control and steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire systems, aiming to accelerate the upgrade of China's powertrain and chassis technologies through joint R&D, shared data resources and coordinated standards development. The initiative is positioned to deliver safer, more efficient and more comfortable mobility solutions for global customers.

With more than 35 years of engineering heritage and a fully integrated industrial footprint, GWM has built one of China's most comprehensive powertrain portfolios. Its capabilities span internal combustion engines, hybrid systems, battery-electric platforms and hydrogen solutions, alongside advances in intelligent chassis technologies such as steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire, underscoring the company's long-term investment in both performance and intelligence.

CAICT Information plays a pivotal role in China's automotive ecosystem as a leading think tank and information services provider. It manages centralized industry data, maintains extensive automotive technology databases and conducts regulatory and standards research. Its strengths also include advanced testing systems, forward-looking technology assessments and applied industrial research across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, quality management and intelligent connected technologies, positioning it as a bridge between R&D, industrial policy and market deployment.

The launch of the joint laboratory signals a deeper form of collaboration between an automaker and an industry think tank. GWM will contribute its vehicle development and manufacturing expertise, large-scale real-world operating data and diverse application scenarios, creating a market-facing environment for rapid validation and iteration. CAIT will complement this with in-depth data analytics, forward-looking standards research, evaluation framework development and cross-sector technology integration. Early research priorities will include high-performance hybrid system optimization, full-scenario reliability validation for by-wire actuators and intelligent chassis calibration under demanding off-road conditions. Operating under an integrated model that aligns demand definition, joint development, standards promotion and shared outcomes, the lab aims not only to deliver cutting-edge solutions but also to help elevate technical standards across key segments of the industry.

GWM said it will continue to pursue an open and collaborative innovation strategy, expanding partnerships with leading research institutions and supply chain players. By building a more open, integrated and sustainable R&D ecosystem, the automaker aims to keep delivering mobility technologies that exceed expectations for customers worldwide.
